I wanted to caputre what I was seeing, hearing and feeling on my first visit ever to New York City. I also submitted this as my first entry into our show and was so shocked to place. Thanks for the wonderful opportunity.

Painting

Carrying (on) is a 36" x 36" acrylic painted from an original pastel sketch by Jane Basile in Sierra Leone, during the 2015 Ebola epidemic. The women who walked down the road outside of the Ebola treatment unit compound where the artist was working at the time, continued with their daily chores despite the reality of the epidemic. Roads were closed to vehicles and schools had been closed for months. Here, the women carried large baskets of cassava on their heads.
