This photograph was one of my entries for the 2010 National Arts Program. It goes along with my other picture of the kid playing the hula at Disney World, Orlando, FL, this picture was taken in San Francisco, CA. These images are part of an ongoing series I'm working on and it is basically kids in their environment being kids, and even though the cities or places that surround them are magnificent, their presence is so strong they overpower the frame.

The Pequot people were “the Water People,” whose territory was the Coasts of Long Island, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. This young Woman’s life is between Ocean and Forest, and their Wetu Village. Because they planted crops, and their beliefs required them to move frequently, animals flourished. This Young Woman greets a Fawn between Ocean and Forest.

MANDEM is a working team of artists, one of whom lives with the genetic disorder Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) that causes failure of connective tissue. The Hypermobility series recenters that disability as a form of beauty via MANDEM's signature approach to the classical realist tradition of figure painting. Using studio models diagnosed with connective tissue disorders, such as EDS, the series captures moments where joints hyperextend or dislocate and the body moves into broken-seeming, impossible configurations. These technique-oriented mixed media/oil paintings explode the line between medical documentation and art. This project began during MANDEM's artist residency at the Associazione Culturale Il Palmerino (Florence, Italy). Hypermobility has exhibited in Italy, England, Canada, and the United States.
