This was a commission from 2008-ish. She is drawn with pencil on paper and colored pencil on the lips. Many of my black and white portraits have some little bit of color in them. That started when I was in art school and had an entire semester of charcoal drawing...no color...I didn't know what to do with myself. So I snuck little bits of color into my assignments since it didn't say anywhere that I couldn't.

11x14 watercolor and colored pencil on 140# watercolor paper. Reference used was a photo taken of my granddaughter and her (then) boyfriend at a gala event at the Airforce Academy in Colorado Springs. I used the photo to create a drawing of them for their wedding gift 2 years ago.

Portion of this piece (the center) started my SDED / Porture series, and it was made around 2000 when, unaware of Bonalumi's (or Fontana's) work, I wondered why the canvas, the support of paint for the traditional painting, receives such a disproportionate attention, and I tried to correct that by embossing objects into the canvas and holding the emerged shape... Years later, I learned about the artistic philosophy of the two great Italian artists, and I realized that, combined, the Bonalumi's 3D approach, and the Fontana's open-up-space solution—a fontalumi gesture—can create a smooth approach to a three dimensional painting!...
