An art show featuring works created by folks employed at the City of Carlsbad opens tomorrow at the city’s William D. Cannon Art Gallery.
The exhibit, called “On Your Own Time: The National Arts Program® at Carlsbad” consists of 192 pieces of art submitted by 125 employees and family members. Works range from painting and sculpture to photography.
The 8th annual exhibition is one of 82 similar programs in 450 cities across the country as part of the National Art Program®.
The event includes an art contest. Winners are picked based on originality and creativity in five categories and receive cash prizes. Entries are judged by an awards committee that includes Skye Walker, who created the mural at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, Betsy Schulz, who is creating the public art for the City of Carlsbad’s Fire Station #3 and City of Carlsbad arts commissioner Joan Markovits.
The contest and exhibit are cosponsored by the City of Carlsbad and National Arts Program Foundation based in Malvern, Pennsylvania. The program has given scholarships for continuing art education and cash awards to public employees and family members since it was founded 31 years ago.
A free opening reception hosted by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts is 5 to 7 p.m. today at the gallery and a free Family Open Studios is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 6 in the gallery courtyard. Materials are provided; reservations not required.
The gallery, 1775 Dove Lane, is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
