Street art is “the most democratic art form that exists,” according to IKEA. That’s why the Swedish furniture company chose street art as the theme for its first ever “IKEA art event”in 2015. With the year quickly wrapping up, it’s worth taking a look back at how the company connected with the world of street artists.
The goal of the project, according to IKEA, was to showcase the reality of the world’s streets by highlighting the work of unique artists from across the globe. Twelve different street artists, from places as diverse as Madrid, China and San Francisco were invited to create unique posters for IKEA.
Those works were then projected by company BEAM INC in 14 locations across Belgium for the public to enjoy.
IKEA also sold prints of each work for $14.99 each, with the hope of making art more affordable for all.
Chen Yingjie, also known as Hua Tunan, was one of the 12 artists commissioned by IKEA to create a piece for the event. His creation, which shows an eagle depicted in vivid colors, represents the courage of street artists, he told IKEA, as the animal is clearly “free, colorful and brave.”
