An art exhibit currently on display in the Hibbing Community College (HCC) library is promoting the arts as well as enhancing student and community life through the arts.

“Art exhibitions help build stronger appreciation for the arts in the community and the college community,” said Katherine Sandnas, HCC art instructor. “Our goal is to develop a greater understanding of the art mediums available and present a variety of techniques artists employ. We’re happy to be able to feature a variety of artists from our region, nation and international artists as well.”

“Art Among the Stacks” has been held at HCC twice per year — in the fall and spring — since 2005. The current exhibit, which can be viewed during library hours through Jan. 31, is titled “Form and Function” and features pottery and other ceramics.

“The artwork presented is inspired by the natural world around us in our Iron Range region,” Sandnas said. “The work presented is for everyday use and appreciation.”

Anyone with an interest in the arts is welcomed to check out the exhibit.

“People who are interested in the beauty and tranquility art provides for us in our lives,” Sandnas added. “expect to view artwork by a local artist who is interested in visually expressing the natural world and culture around him.”

The exhibit was also used as a teaching tool for HCC students. Local artist David Meyer held a ceramic demonstration for students, which included assisting them through a clay project from start to finish.
