A man who was photographed by a bystander splashed a red substance on a blank gallery wall on the third floor of the Whitney Museum of Art on Wednesday, the police said.

The man was quickly apprehended by security and removed by the police, the museum said. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The floor, which displays a Jeff Koons retrospective, was temporarily closed but reopened within two hours. No art was damaged.
