Young artist displays super strengths at BAC art exhibit

Six-year-old Luke Amelio has loved to draw since he was old enough to hold a pencil, and superheroes quickly became his favorite subject.

On July 12, Luke had the opportunity to see 15 of his favorite superhero drawings showcased in an exhibit that is on display in the Atrium Gallery of the Beverly Arts Center through Aug. 4.

“Super Luke” is an exhibit of artwork created by the Mt. Greenwood resident, a first-grade student at Cassell Elementary School who is currently undergoing treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or ALL. The exhibit is sponsored by Bear Necessities, a national organization that funds pediatric cancer research and supports young cancer patients through customized experiences in its “Bear Hugs” program.

Luke’s mother, Jen, said that art has been a source of comfort for her son since he was diagnosed with ALL in November 2012. Luke receives outpatient treatment at Advocate Children’s Hospital weekly, his mom said, and spends most of his time there engaged in the art therapy activities the hospital provides.

“Drawing keeps his mind occupied, his spirit high and it passes the time during long clinic days,” Amelio said in an e-mail. “And, when he’s finished with yet another masterpiece, he’s filled with a huge sense of accomplishment. Luke is always so proud to show off his latest works—simply put, it brings him joy.”
