Southern Illinois Healthcare is looking for local artists to create works to adorn the walls and interiors of the SIH Cancer Center.
The center is under construction at 4100 Pin Oak Drive in Carterville.
“I think when we have the grand opening, it will also be an art exhibit,” said Jennifer Badiu, SIH System Director of Cancer Services, noting all types of mediums are under consideration such as metal, glass, acrylic, water colors and photographs. “This is an opportunity to lend a hand to inspire healing through the arts.”
SIH administrators are working with different people from the local art community such as Dona Bachman of the SIU Museum and Nancy Stemper of Carbondale Community Arts to assist with reviewing proposals and eventually making selections. Artists will be given financial stipends from gifts received for the project, Badiu said.
More than 250 artists have been invited to the Tuesday program at SIH. No RSVP is required. Artists will receive complete packets of information and watch a PowerPoint presentation on how to submit proposals. The hour-long program will also take artists on a virtual tour of the center. They will learn how their work can blend with the SIH vision for the center.
Artists will eventually submit résumés, letters of intent and sketches of what they propose, Badiu said.
“We want to incorporate artwork that has relevance to the Southern Illinois region and local community. Our goal is to provide a relaxing and positive experience for our patients and their families while they are receiving cancer care,” Badiu said.
