New York based Cytopathologist, Arnold H. Szporn has been planning retirement after 40 years of service by returning to his first love, painting. Initially influenced by MOMA's 1968 "Dada, Surrealism and Their Heritage", he has more recently begun to appreciate abstract expressionist works by Mitchell, Frankenthaler, the de Koonings and southern abstract landscape painter Brian Rutenberg. Self-taught and originally working exclusively with acrylics on canvas, Dr. Szporn has more recently been experimenting with mixed media as a vehicle to achieve originality. Retirement is not to be feared, but embraced for the opportunity it presents.
Frozen Section Man Study
Frozen Section Man Study
Painting
Acrylic on Canvas, 11" X 14" X 1.5". A frozen section is an immediate evaluation of tissue by a pathologist at the time of an operative procedure usually used to guide the surgeon's next decision. Fresh issue is frozen so that very thin slices can be sectioned on a cryostat, mounted on a glass slide, stained and examined under a microscope. The central image of "Frozen Section Man Study" is an anthropomorphic figure, the top half of which represents a microscope and the bottom half of which represents a cryostat. A thin wash of blue was employed to help the figure emerge from the multilayered background.
