Balance Pot #5
Craft
This piece is created from clay, wheel thrown then altered. The firing technique is Raku, which is a low fire technique that brings the clay piece quickly up to 1800 degrees F. The piece is pulled out and immediately set in a reduction can with paper, which ignites, and it is then covered to contain the smoke creating a heavy reduction atmosphere, and is then rapidly cooled. The original Raku tradition was created in Japan 400 years ago. (Raku pieces are purely decorative. They are very porous; therefore, they are unable to hold liquid and are not food safe. They also should not be left in direct sunlight, which can cause fading.)
