It is my intent to create purposeful synergies of make-believe concepts without losing a sense of realistic grounding. My reasoning is that a bit of reality creates a stasis for belief combined with fantasy it becomes the innovation in developing a story.

Inspired by the Dutch Vanitas flower paintings from the sixteenth and seventeenth century. And even more specifically Rachel Ruysch who was know for her brilliant delicate poppies in her amazingly realistic flower paintings. I thought how could I incorporate my theme mixing things belonging above and below sea level? I have always had the notion that many of the sea creatures look as though they fill comparable niches as their land dwelling cousins. I introduced different species of sea anemone and tube worms. I stuck with clown fish mostly due to the exciting movement of culturing these guys. My aquarium hobby is mostly responsible for this painting, the one I refer to as my Cloud Dragon is probably one of my simplest paintings. Dissolving the divide between water and air, intermixing them to create a fantasy that doesn’t travel too far from the reality. After all flying fish do sort of fly, and one could potentially place paper cranes in the water. I modeled the simplistic landscape after one of my many favorite aquascapes.
