A Monument to Charles Darwin
Works on Paper
This 5 foot tall charcoal drawing celebrates Charles Darwin's bold decision to publish his theory of evolution despite opposition from the church and most of the public. For years, scientific thought was able to coexist, even thrive alongside religion - hence the evolving birds within the cage. However, Darwin's theory directly challenged biblical teachings, making it much harder for his ideas to gain public support. Since the publication of On The Origins of Species, evolutionary biology has enriched countless fields; this is represented by the finch flying freely from the cage.
