Roots in West Virginia, educated in North Carolina, Tony Waldron has developed a style in Durham that is quite original and refreshing. His work is instantly recognizable due to the use of bright vivid colors interlaced with black outlines that highlight imperfections and color transitions. Recently Tony has adjusted his style from using canvas and ink, to spray paint, a paint brush and stencils.

Jump Shot
Painting
This painting was developed over the course of two days using Montana Gold spray paint, black acrylic paint and paint markers. The inspiration was a photo of a jump shot with the Taj Mahal in background. The jump silhouette exhibits happiness and excitement, which Tony expresses with the color selection of the background. The arched frame was painted to mimic the brick arches that are present in the surrounding space. The painting measures 92 inches tall by 102 inches wide. Tony always signs his paintings with a TW in the lower right corner, where the T is made to look like bull horns.

I painted this piece with paper towels. By using different folding and tearing techniques I was able to obtain different effects.

The Great Kite Boarder
Mixed Media
This image of The Great Wave by Hokusai was digitally altered and merged with the Japanese empirial flag. I then created a multi-layered stencil for the kite and a seperate stencil for the kiteboarder. The digital images were printed on a heavy canvas fabric and then stretched over a frame. Then the stencils were spraypainted onto the fabric.
