Toya Wallace is a contemporary mixed-media artist. Her life as an artist began when she was a very small child. Toya draws, paints, sculpts, and writes poetry. She loves to create! With the exception of her charcoal, and pen and ink drawings, most of her artwork is created using recycled materials. Toya uses bright colors and a wide variety of textures when she creates her artwork. Using recycled materials allows her the freedom to do this. She often incorporates African and Native American symbols into her artwork as a way to appreciate and celebrate both her African and Native American Heritages. In her artwork, Toya often incorporates materials that once belonged to deceased family members. She says that “This is my accolade to my ancestors and to my family.”
Toya has won multiple visual art awards and has had her artwork on exhibit at The Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington NC, The CAB Art Gallery at UNC Wilmington, The National Humanities Center, Research Triangle Park, NC, The Duke Campus Club Exhibit Wall at Duke University, Durham, NC, Duke University in the Bryan Center, Duke University Hospital, Mark Jacobson Toyota Art Gallery, Durham, NC, The Durham NC CenterFest Arts Festival, The Art Museum at North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC, The NC Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC and The Renaissance Art Center in Wake Forest, NC.
Toya is a recent graduate of Duke University's Graduate School, graduating on May 13. 2023.
