This work of art was created by a process called Yarn Painting. I start by drawing. Then I add an adhesive layer over the drawing. Then I lay lengths of yarn in bright colors onto the adhesive. This is a whimsical piece that from afar looks like an ice cream cone with a scoop of vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate with a cherry on top. When you look closer, you see it is three kittens on top of the cone. One licking it's paw. One sleeping peacefully. And one playing with the cherry. I believe that the intention is by now obvious: I want my canvas to travel up and down the 2-D surface, flirting with the third dimension, as well as mimicking the conventional bas-relief by being raised above the background plane. The subjects are mostly dictated by the mechanics that arise from shaping the canvas, that, at times, they purposely change to fit a narrative. The bold red and pink (magenta) colors mirror the subtle (almost invisible) transition from 2 to 3-D, keeping a good hold on the balance of the composition.

One of a series of 10 large abstract paintings depicting CLIMATE CHANGE.
MOUNTAINTOP REARRANGED visualizes how mountaintops that are removed (in order to get to coal) can result in a drastically changed topography. Often it is not possible to return the mountaintop to its original contours. Scientists from the universities of Kentucky and California recently released a study detailing the climate implications of coal extraction by mountaintop removal because in the end the area may emit more carbon.

An Anthozoaborg is a machine colony-organism hybrid, something like a coral reef cyborg. The detailed drawing entitled “Anthozoaborg 1” depicts one such creature. This particular one is roaming the desert in an impossible future New Mexico. It has three large head-like group-communities and a set of shared bio and mecha motility flanges (legs). The creature has partially ensconced itself in the branches of a dead and bark-less tree. As in other works in this series, the creature and environment depicted could perhaps be physically consistent in some sense. The subject, though, does not seem to have a possible origin: there is no real possibility that this creature could come to exist in a natural way. If it were to pop into existence somehow, however, it might persist for a while before succumbing to our regimented reality.

I was impressed by the uniqueness and intricacy of these orchids. I left a lot of the photo intact and only etched parts I felt would enhance what nature so nicely created.
