In the aftermath of the Santa Rosa fires, I couldn't help but relate the losses that so many families suffered to the loss of memories altogether. This lead me to compare the event to another tragedy which afflicts many families, including my own: caring for someone diagnosed with dementia. In this piece, the woman's mind is like a house up in flames, slowly burning away her memories and her identity until only embers will be left of who she once was.
