Painting

The tallest building in Richmond is here depicted as seen from the Shockoe District of the city. Railroad trestles are in the foreground, dividing the composition and making it more complex. A cloud reflection is seen in the windows of the skyscraper, as is a tiny white poster that was in one of the windows for years.

In a fauvist-inspired Interior, a lake is seen outside through a large window, bounded by a large red drape. The perspective is distorted to emphasize the picture plane, which pushes the color forward as all the tones compete for supremacy in this bold arrangement.

Painted on location during a slightly wet day in Richmond, the small amount of rain was not enough to disturb the oil paint, which repelled the water. The weather did encourage me to complete the painting, however, which took about three or four hours.

With a nod to Matisse, and an inclusion of my own 'Beach Scene' painting in the background, here I again distort perspective to my own ends, further complicating the issue with a mirror, while continuing to unify my images with color!

A gestural, over-sized painting, the colors here indicate not only heat, but also a cooling. The gestural & distended brush strokes help to emphasize the intention of the title.

The French tri-color flag is seen in the left corner, flowing into the beach scene illuminated by the famous sunlight of that region. The brushwork is gestural, but not too energetic, allowing the color to define the inter-locking composition.

Dedicated to the 1st Infantry Division of the United States Army, this over-sized (5' tall) oil painting is intense and energetic, the geometric boundaries barely containing its strong, gestural brushwork and dominating color scheme.

A small painting, the brush strokes are gestural and the color defines the forms.

I drew this for the 'Blank Canvas' art contest sponsored by Professional Artist magazine and was rather literal in my interpretation of the contest title! Artists were required to draw in a small section of a page - actual blank canvas optional.
