This graphite drawing was completed in 2017 and is part of a series of surreal evolution illustrations.  The work depicts a tree-like form with rectangular toroids made of a bony or ossified material.   The tree-form is skeletal and may or may not be alive.  Surrealism and academic realism are combined in this work to create an image of a physically possible form, but one that contains elements that are un-natural in some sense.

This is a photograph taken with a Minolta X370 35mm film camera using Kodak Tri-X Pan 400 film. It is of some of the ruins of the old gunpowder mill complex, built by Asa Taylor in 1816 and operated by the Laflin & Rand Powder Company after 1869, located in the Town of Newburgh, NY in Algonquin Park. The mill produced gun powder for local residents for hunting and sport at the time before producing finer smokeless powder used by the Union Army in the Civil War.

I question, what connects us to a particular place. The spirit of place creates the ingredients of community and belonging. Viewing an aerial image on Google earth, we are blind to the details of man’s life and history down on earth.
In the topography, we see shadows and elevations of mountains, lakes, hills, and desert. In contrast, as we zoom in further and further, we go on a more profound journey. Our eyes are opened to life, nature, and details of the built environment – man’s impressive handiwork.

Ironically this photo was shot on Mother's Day 2016.  When i saw the face on the gorilla and the playful baby with the towel on his head, all i could think of was a Mom rolling her eyes and thinking "You are NOT wearing that!"  Man and animal,  similar in so many ways!

Border collie spends his river days in the water.

The Great White Egret has a wingspan of 5 feet or more. I caught this one flying over Bodega Bay late in the day so the wing was backlit and reflected in the calm water. The black and white enhances the calm of the image.
