A Refresh for VCU

Two NAP Airport Venues make the Best U.S. Airports for Art list

Airports have been transforming themselves from utilitarian hubs of transport to spaces in which we don't mind spending time.  A renaissance has occurred beyond great restaurants, comfy lounges and  terrific shopping though; airports also uplift their visitors through the utilization of beautiful works of art.  In this contest category, USA TODAY's airport columnist Harriet Baskas has nominated 20 airports as contenders for Best U.S. Airports for Art. You can vote once a day until NOON on Nov 11.  Winners will be revealed on Nov.

Orlando International Airport Shares the Art

Orlando International Airport, FL held their Eighth Annual National Arts Program® Exhibition for employees and their family members from August 22nd - October 4th. Their NAP show is entitled ‘Share the Art’ and their participants certainly did share their artistic talents in a big way. Coordinator Vera Walker commented that, "...it was a huge success. This year’s show is considered one of our best." With participation numbers up 84%, this was a record breaking year.

NAP Continues to Bring People Together in LA

Los Angeles Superior Court, CA celebrated their Tenth Anniversary with one of the largest shows in their history with the NAP. With more than 179 pieces of artwork on view by 120 artists, the exhibition displayed a wide range of talents from many different mediums. The show was hung in the three Jury Assembly Rooms of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse and the Criminal Justice Center.
 
During the awards reception held on July 25th, Coordinator Pebbla Wallace made a heartfelt statement about her involvement with the NAP over the years.

Touchable art at Duke

NAP staff members were honored to attend the Fifth Annual National Arts Program® Exhibition at Duke Medical Center on September 5th. Though this is the fifth year that the NAP has been involved in the employee art show, the exhibition was actually started thirty five years earlier.

Record Numbers for Honolulu

With strong support from Mayor Caldwell along with the hard work of new venue coordinator Scott Goto, it’s no wonder this year’s exhibition in Honolulu, HI was a tremendous success. The show not only featured 101 participants exhibiting 163 pieces, but boasted the highest numbers for both categories since joining the National Arts Program® seven years ago!
 
Even with all the growth this year, Scott was still able to keep many of the traditions that make this show so unique, including presenting each award winner with a flower lei at the reception.

Art from transit employees going on display

VIA Metropolitan Transit and the National Arts Program® have teamed up to organize the VIA Employee Art Exhibit 2013. This exhibit showcases the artistic talents of VIA’s employees and their family members.
 
The exhibit will be on display in the Westside Multimodal Transit Center from October 19 through November 15, and the display is free and open to the public. The Westside Multimodal Transit Center is located at 123 North Medina Street, and it is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.

New Banksy art in NYC already removed after less than 24 hours

On Tuesday afternoon, new art from Banksy was spotted on New York’s Lower East Side as part of the artist’s month-long “residency” in the city. Banksy had announced his NYC stint, called “Better Out Than In” on his website. He said he’d be “attempting to host an entire show on the streets of New York.”

Though the show got off to a rocky start when the first piece on Allen Street was partially dismantled and then entirely painted over less than 24 hours after it was discovered.

I still get a lot of surprised looks when I tell people that, starting in October, I'll become the Victoria and Albert Museum's first ever games designer in residence.
 
It could be because I'm only 23, but I suspect it's really rooted in the fact that a traditional arts institution – more commonly associated with porcelain, fabric and furniture – is employing a games designer at all.
